UH OH
No fanarts allowed in Otakon artist alley!

While that should help cut down the number of people trying to get a table, and thus improve the chances of ME getting my space... uhhh... I dunno.

Interesting, I wonder just how strictly this will be enforced.

Hmmmm, yes indeeds.

Yeah, it might end up being just a scare...

I seriously don't know which is worse -- these rules being enforced, or ignored.

Probably them being inconsistently enforced.

Can't sell or display stuff depicting characters, images, etc. etc. that you do not own -- even if the composition and pose and such are your own.

There are other changes too, but I don't think those are as big a news as that.

Did they say WHY, though? I don't think they could get into any legal trouble, could they?

Man, who am I going to ask for Vanessa pictures now :(

They just mentioned the legal stuff.

I have a BAJILLION things to say about the new rules and the way the department head is responding to the posts, but I think I should just drop it. :\ They don't seem to be listening to critiques.

I mean, this isn't going to affect me much... most of what I sold in the past were originals. But the way they're just dismissing criticisms really bugs me.

Oh, and the department head also said:

"It will NOT be allowed. Again, what would the original artist/creator think? And what would the original artist's/creator's lawyers think?"

Oh well, I'm sure blobs of people did Zero's argument about doujinshi and stuff.

North America is just stupid overall when it comes to this sort of stuff. I mean, people sue just cuz you sneezed on them.

*uhhhh*

I don't know how I feel about this. This was the first time I was considering attending Otakon's AA in a few years and now the policy has changed.

I also don't think the department head is actually listening to any ofthe questions being asked, after reading the post and replies. She seems to be brushing it all off, not to mention the fact that Otakon will now have contraditory policies in multiple departments. For instance, if the Art Show and the Dealer's Room alow the sale of things like fanart and/or doujinshi, then the AA artist loses out due to tighter restrictions on what they're allowed to sell.

*narf*

POSTED. Let's see how Rachel Ann completely disregards it!

Ah, well. At best, they have an ABSOLUTELY DISASTEROUS year at Artist Alley, and things will be back to normal for 2007's Otakon. At worst... well, there ARE other conventions >;3.

WTF. Makes me less interested in going there in the future. I don't do much fanart but it sure sells in AA. Are they gonna not allow it in the art show either? Watch their AA go poof. No one's trying to shut down all the Japanese doujinshi.

I'm going to have to go with "Rachel Ann is a retard who 1) doesn't understand how transactions in an artist alley work and 2) can't do math regarding table space and price".

I'm also going to have to go with "Otakon is going to be too expensive and not make anyone any money" and mark that off my list of cons I might go to. Not too bad, I needed to have a reason not to go anyway. And I hate, HATE the way the Otakon artist alley is run. Hated it last year too.

Kind of a shame.

I for one won't really be concerned about it, since I usually don't really have fanart in my portfolio. I TRIED to have some, but lord knows how much I love drawing fanart =P (not!)

But I do enjoy people drawing fanart though. People can do such lovely work! It would be a shame not to allow it in AA.

But then again I'm not sure I want to show up again at Otakon. I have sent countless e-mails about not being payed for my art that went into auction and they NEVER replied. I'm annoyed really. T___T I won't get to see you Min!!! NOOOOOOOOO T_____T
